The University Hospital Maastricht and Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences of Maastricht University joined forces in January 2008 to form the Maastricht University Medical Center+ (Maastricht UMC+). Its main tasks include patient care, education, and research, all of which are closely interrelated. Of equal importance are leading referrals and advanced clinical care, both of which require close cooperation with basic and (experimental) clinical research.
Key research areas include cardiovascular and chronic diseases, oncology, mental health care, and neurosciences. The total consolidated annual budget for Maastricht University Medical Center+ is €387m (06/07 financial year), of which 86% (€295m) is earmarked for patient care.
